Schoenstatt, Mount Sion, 1 August 2026 – The Schoenstatt Fathers, together with Fr Klaus Krenz’s family, friends, and many members of the Schoenstatt Family, gathered on Saturday, 1 August, to celebrate the Funeral Mass and commend the life of a priest whose ministry touched countless lives.
The Funeral Mass was presided by Fr Agustín Alvarez, who, much like Fr. Klaus in his final years, is living a vocation as a hermit Schoenstatt Father. In his homily, Fr Arkadiusz Sosna reflected on Fr. Klaus Krenz as a true pilgrim of hope, a priest who remained deeply rooted in Christ and dedicated his life to serving people with openness, humility, and compassion. Following the Eucharistic celebration, the final prayers were led by Fr. Michael Hagan, rector of the filiation to which belonged Fr Klaus.
Many members of Fr. Klaus’s family, fellow Schoenstatt Fathers, priests, friends, and representatives of the Schoenstatt Movement came together to give thanks for his life and priestly witness. Their presence was a moving sign of the deep appreciation and affection he inspired throughout his years of ministry.
Born on 15 December 1940 in Upper Silesia, Klaus Krenz was ordained to the priesthood on 25 June 1967 in Erfurt. After serving as a diocesan priest, he joined the Schoenstatt Fathers in 1979, dedicating himself to the pastoral care of the Schoenstatt communities in East Germany, like Magdeburg, Berlin and beyond. His priestly ministry was marked by simplicity, closeness to people, and a profound love for the Blessed Mother and the Schoenstatt charism.
Among the many chapters of his ministry, his years as a prison chaplain in Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder) stand out as a remarkable witness to the Gospel. Guided by Christ’s words, “I was in prison and you visited me” (Mt 25), he brought hope and dignity to those living on the margins of society. He was also known as a gifted writer, a lover of literature, and a man who engaged in sincere dialogue with people from every walk of life.
In the later years of his life, Fr Klaus embraced a more contemplative way of living, dedicating himself to Eucharistic adoration and prayer while continuing to inspire those around him through his quiet presence. In 2025, he moved to the Provincial House on Mount Sion, where he spent his final months.
Fr Klaus Krenz passed away on 26 July 2026 after receiving palliative care at Mount Sion. His life remains a testimony to steadfast faith, priestly dedication, and missionary service. As the words from Psalm 125:1, chosen for his memorial card, remind us:
“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.”May the Lord grant Fr Klaus Krenz eternal rest, and may his faithful witness continue to inspire future generations of Schoenstatt Fathers and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
