The Kentenich Magister

The Kentenich Magister is a specialized two-year training program established by the Schoenstatt Fathers in response to the mandates of the 2015 and 2022 General Chapters. Its primary goal is to cultivate experts in the life and writings of Father Joseph Kentenich from all territories. This comprehensive initiative utilizes a hybrid model of online and offline learning to deepen the understanding of the founder’s charism. Throughout the two-year duration, the participants gather at the Vaterhaus on Mount Sion, Germany, for three two-week residencies held at the beginning, middle, and end of the course. The curriculum is structured into specific units covering the clarification of charisms, Father Kentenich’s biography, and the historical interpretation of Schoenstatt.

During the first year, participants focus on the actuality of the charism within modern culture and the Church while developing guidelines for their own praxis. A vital component of this initial stage is exploring the “Key to Understanding Schoenstatt” to provide a solid theological and spiritual foundation for further research. The second year shifts toward updating the charism, exploring the concept of “Neugründung” (new foundation), and examining the impact of the Vatican II Council. The participants engage in deep readings of primary sources, including autobiographical texts and the landmark October Letter of 1949, to build a common spiritual and intellectual basis.

Each coming together in the Vaterhaus includes community moments, especially celebrating the Holy Mass together, to foster fraternity among the Fathers. A highlight of these gatherings is the opportunity for the participants to share insights, connecting their personal history with the salvation history and the history of Schoenstatt. A significant time is dedicated to the methodology and preparation of a personal thesis in the second meeting, culminating in the presentation of a synopsis. By the end of the program, the participating Fathers are equipped to understand the founder’s writings more deeply and to offer their expertise in service to the international Community.
