Fr Alexandre Awi Mello is the new Secretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life
Pope Francis has appointed Fr Alexandre Awi Mello (Brazil) as the Secretary of the new Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. It is a high responsibility: he will be the second official in the Dicastery after Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell (Ireland). And this in an area which is so important to us, and where Schoenstatt has the call to make a significant contribution.
It is a further reason for joy that the announcement takes place on the 31st of May, the day on which in many countries we celebrate the conclusion of the month of Mary and the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary – we could say, the feast of Mary as a Missionary – and for us the day of the Third Milestone, the day of Schoenstatt’s mission for the church.
I would like to congratulate our confrere Fr Alexandre for this appointment and for what it means; also for all he has done through his dedicated and high-quality commitment over the years, which now led to this new responsibility.
We thank the Holy Father for his confidence in and his acknowledgment of Fr Alexandre, which we somehow can consider to be also an acknowledgment of the charism of Fr Kentenich.
I would also like to thank the Region Sião de Cristo for making Fr Alexandre available for this high task. It is the sole initiative and decision of the Holy Father himself, but the Region has shown great readiness and generosity in putting him at disposition, although it represents a major sacrifice.
We are with Fr Alexandre and accompany him with our prayers and contributions to the Capital of Grace so that he may be a good bearer of the charism of Father Kentenich in the service of the laity, the families and the protection and promotion of human life, for the whole Church.
